Keep Building The Dream

While taking the time to honor slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, I want to also acknowledge his close friend, advisor, and the central organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, the openly gay - Bayard Rustin. Today, the fight for equal rights isn’t resigned to one particular race or one particular cause. Civil rights issues are human rights issues. If a civil liberty is denied, that denial must be addressed. If the necessary measures to address an injustice mirrors another time in our history, when society was forced to address slavery’s ugly past, and the fruits of slave labor, then so be it. Dr. King’s dream of economic democracy and international human rights is a battle that still wages. Poverty, racism, sexism, and homophobia run rampant. Keeping in mind that no community should work for justice only for itself, we must remember that what’s vital is that all forms of prejudice are rejected. If not, they will strengthen, and eventually revisit, further altering the legacy left behind for us.
